What is the functional unit of the kidneys?

The nephrons are the functional unit of the kidneys. They are responsible for the removal of the wastes from the blood. Millions of nephrons are present inside the kidneys, and more than 85% of the nephrons are known as cortical nephrons. The remaining 15% nephrons are juxtamedullary nephrons that are located in the renal cortex close to the renal medulla.

The nephrons consist of three parts: a renal corpuscle, a renal tubule, and the associated capillary network. The beginning part of the nephrons (renal corpuscle) is located in the renal cortex and is composed of small blood vessels known as the glomerulus. The Glomerulus is surrounded by the cup-shaped chamber known as the Bowman’s capsule.

The other part of the nephron is renal tubule, which is a long convoluted structure that looms from the glomerulus. The last part of the nephrons connects with the outer surface of the kidneys and collects the ducts.

The nephrons are responsible for the multiple functions of the body. A nephron is used to separate water, wastes, and tiny molecules from the blood. They take out toxins and excess fluid from the blood and the return the needed molecules to the blood.
